A precision mission for the CHL

Between Val Fleuri and rue Federspiel, the country's future largest hospital is gradually taking shape alongside the existing CHL and its maternity unit, built in 2015. Félix Giorgetti, in temporary association with CBL, Galère Lux and Lux TP, is responsible for the structural work on this major project in the capital.

Started last February, the site of the new CHL is punctuated by four tower cranes and is progressing at a steady pace. On the agenda: the construction of 54,000 m2 spread over nine floors and three basement levels.

‘In some places, the building has reached the first floor, while in others we're on the ground floor or basement -1,’ explains David Pina Marques, our works manager.

In the coming weeks, the worksite will begin laying the barite concrete used in so-called ‘critical’ areas to protect medical equipment from radiation. This concrete, which is denser than conventional concrete, requires a more appropriate protocol. ‘With a density of 3,200 kg/m3, compared with around 2,350 kg/m3 for conventional concrete, its weight is significantly higher. As a result, lorries arrive partially loaded, and the concrete has to be poured more slowly to avoid putting too much strain on the formwork. In addition, vibration must be limited so as not to alter the density of the material’, he explains.  The structural work will continue until 2027, with new stages that are just as exciting!
