A look back at the 4th GioRun

The GioRun, a charity race organised by the Giofriends, was held on the 16th of June at the Félix Giorgetti logistics centre in Leudelange. Here's a look back at yet another successful event, with over 500 runners and 22,000 euros raised for a good cause.

Sunshine, highly motivated runners and walkers, enthusiastic volunteers, an unusual setting and a festive atmosphere... All the ingredients were present on Friday 16 June to ensure that this 2023 edition of the GioRun was another success. This year's event, organised to support local charities Alan Maladies Rares and Parkinson Luxembourg, attracted more than 500 runners, including experienced athletes, amateurs and beginners. In addition to the traditional 5.5 and 10 km routes, a solidarity walk accessible to people with reduced mobility was organised in parallel. Over thirty people proudly took part in this new 3-km format.

Joy is in the air

The evening was marked by a sportive and friendly atmosphere.

A champion's warm-up

Before the start of the race, our partner company Coach at Home offered sports enthusiasts a warm-up led by none other than Ukrainian athlete Tatyana Vernygor, winner of the GioRun 2022 and the last ING Luxembourg Half Marathon. All the ingredients were there to get the atmosphere going and get the race underway in the best possible conditions.

Tatyana Vernygor and Yonas Kinde unbeaten

It was Tatyana Vernygor who dominated the 10km run, as did Kenya's Yonas Kinde. They respectively completed the course in 39'44" and 34'01". Anne-Claire Decker and Joao Pedro Miranda Cepa respectively won the 5.5km run in 22'57" and 19'13". Paul Giorgetti then presented the winners in each category with their cups and prizes.

For a good cause

After the race, it was time for the festivities! The highlight of the evening was when the Giofriends had the pleasure of presenting Alan Maladies Rares and Parkinson Luxembourg with a handsome donation. Organised to support these local associations, which work on a daily basis to improve the lives of patients and their families, the GioRun gave each of them a cheque for 11,000 euros!

Lots of prizes to win

The Giofriends then organised a tombola, in which all the participants were able to take part by entering their race number. Gift cards from Concept+Partners, Coach at Home, We Love To Travel and car washes from FM Detailing were at stake thanks to our generous partners.

A festive and delicious atmosphere

Meanwhile, the barbecue was provided by the Portuguese community association Casa, which works for the social integration of newcomers to Luxembourg, while the refreshment area, run by Giofriends volunteers, was full to the brim and quenched the thirst of the many participants and visitors. All in a warm and friendly atmosphere, with plenty of music.

Many thanks to all the volunteers, runners, walkers, associations, partners and sponsors who took part in this latest edition of the GioRun and contributed to its success! See you next year for new adventures!

A new life for our tarps

Thanks to this upcycling initiative, we are able to recycle our tarps while supporting the local community.

As in 2019, the Giofriends asked Dono to recycle the GioRun advertising tarps. The Luxembourg-based charity works with people who have missed out on employment to give new life to tarps by transforming them into everyday objects that are both beautiful and useful.

This year, Dono used the tarps from the GioRun 2022 to make large bags with handles made from used Ferrac straps, as well as pencil cases. These unique handmade pieces were presented at the GioRun and offered for sale.

In keeping with the spirit of solidarity driving the Giofriends, all proceeds will be donated to the Fondation Autisme Luxembourg.
