The country's largest hospital in Luxembourg City

Under discussion since 2013, work on the new CHL began last February. The structural work is being carried out by the joint venture Félix Giorgetti, CBL, Galère Lux and Lux TP.

With a surface area of 54,158 m2, the new building stretches between Val Fleury and Rue Federspiel, on the site where the old maternity hospital once stood.

The building has nine stores and three basement levels. It will have 378 rooms, 478 beds, 18 operating theatres, 6 endoscopy rooms and two helipads. The project also includes concrete elements such as the central staircase and underground elements such as these columns.

The aim of the project is to bring together on a single site all the acute clinical activities that have until now been split between CHL Centre and CHL Eich, as well as the National Institute of Cardiac Surgery and Interventional Cardiology (INCCI). It is also surrounded by the existing CHL, to which it will be linked by a footbridge, and the maternity unit, which opened in 2015.

High-density walls

Punctuated by four tower cranes, the impressive 115 m long and wide worksite is set about 12 m below road level. As work began at the start of the year, we are currently building the basement levels,’ explains project manager David Pina Marques. The construction of a hospital involves several technical peculiarities, including the use of baryta (high-density) concrete for the perimeter walls and the so-called ‘critical’ areas, which contain machines or products. We also have two types of waterproofing. For the perimeter walls, we use a white tank that makes the concrete water-repellent and prevents cracking. And for critical areas, we use a membrane that adheres to the concrete when it is poured.

Completion of the shell, external works and networks are scheduled for the end of 2027.
