Following demolition and earthworks, a new major phase is underway at the construction site of the future CFL headquarters: the installation of the steel framework, carried out mainly at night, cantilevered 3.5 meters above the railway tracks.
Since September 2023, structural engineering teams have been working on the site of the future CFL headquarters to complete its transformation: 57,000 m³ of earthworks on three basement levels of different sizes, followed by the demolition of more than 90% of the old building while preserving its historic facade, and the reconstruction of the campus. This new headquarters, consisting of five main buildings with the tallest structures reaching eleven stories, is designed to accommodate more than 1,200 employees in a 24,000 m² space.
A major technical challenge, carried out at night
Overlooking part of the CFL tracks, the 600-ton steel frame is taking shape on the building alongside the platforms. This structure plays a key role: it serves as the foundation for the extension, optimizes space, and provides a stable and solid base on which the six upper concrete floors will be built.
In order to guarantee user safety and avoid disrupting train traffic, the operation is carried out exclusively during the rail shutdown, between 11:30 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. Two to three metal beams, weighing between 15 and 24.5 tons, are gradually installed in a cantilevered position 3.5 meters above platform 1. This operation, which will require a total of 60 nights of meticulous work, demands rigorous coordination and maximum efficiency from the teams. It reached its climax with the installation of the heaviest element of the structure, weighing 24.5 tons (photo opposite).
The headquarters rises
This stage marks the beginning of the building's rise and will give the headquarters a new silhouette. This ambitious project combines modernity, functionality, and respect for the architectural heritage of Luxembourg train station.
