Tunnel sliding under railway tracks
As part of the construction of the Micheville link, which connects the Esch-sur-Alzette bypass motorway to the N31 in France, Félix Giorgetti carried out the jacking of an 8,000-tonne tunnel.
The Félix Giorgetti teams built two separate reinforced concrete frames on site which were jacked under the CFL Cargo railway tracks, on the Luxembourg-Pétange line, as well as a 28m connection structure.
The tunnel sections were precast on a guide slab founded on 50 piles in front of the embankment of the railway tracks. For the box jacking process, excavators gradually excavated the embankment from inside the structure, allowing the tunnel to be thrust forward into the space. This was followed by backfilling and repositioning of the tracks.
